Last week, all the children at Ecclesbourne Primary School participated in the NSPCC’s Speak Out, Stay Safe programme. This consists of an online assembly and follow up activities in class. Year 2, 5 & 6 were also lucky enough to take part in a workshop run by volunteers from NSPCC. The aim of these workshops is to help children understand abuse in all its forms and to recognise the signs of abuse in a child friendly way. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a trusted adult or Childline. We linked this learning to our work from the previous week where we celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week: Know Yourself, Grow Yourself.
On Tuesday 11th February, the school also celebrated Safer Internet Day and this year’s theme was ‘Too good to be true?’. Here at Ecclesbourne, we started with a whole school assembly where the children children looked at this theme and explored the idea that information on the Internet cannot always be trusted. We thought about not sharing private information online such as your full name, passwords, address, birthday and school. We also looked at how to spot online scams and explored some scenarios where we identified how we knew it was a scam. If you’d like to discuss this topic more with your child then please look at the resources available on the UK Safer Internet Centre: https://saferinternet.org.uk/ or the resources available on the Pegasus website: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/online-learning
