As part of our continued commitment to reading and phonics, we were delighted to take delivery this week of even more books to support the delivery of our Little Wandle Phonics programme. Although this is a significant budget allocation, at Atwood we recognise the power of reading to change lives and drive social mobility. We know that when children are able to read they are able to access the rest of the curriculum and this leads to success throughout their educational journey. We also believe in the power of reading for pleasure. Evidence shows that children who read books often at age 10 and more than once a week at age 16 gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly. 9
This latest delivery will allow us to ensure that all children have access to appropriately levelled texts in school for their reading practice sessions and are able to bring home a physical book to support their learning at home. We have a group of volunteers willingly packaging up the books with all the corresponding phonics cards and ‘tricky words’ and then they will be out in to classrooms. Happy reading!
