Our Learning Adventures In Yellow Class So Far…

As the first term continues, we are continuing to embark on an incredible journey of learning and creativity! Every day brings new excitement, as we dive into hands-on activities that develop essential skills whilst we have fun.

One of our highlight projects involved pumpkins! The children enhanced their gross motor skills by using screws on pumpkins, a delightful way to engage their fine motor abilities. Each child took turns, carefully twisting and turning, giggling as they worked together. Once the pumpkins were transformed, we emptied them out for a delicious project ahead. Soon, the children used the inside of the pumpkin to make a pretend pumpkin soup.

Our phonics lessons have been equally engaging. This week we have learnt the ‘v, volcano’ sound and even had our very own pretend volcano in class! Using our keen observation skills, we created detailed drawings of volcanoes with lots of bursting out colourful lava while practicing writing the sound ‘v’. Some of us challenged ourselves to write all the sounds they could hear in the word “volcano.” and one child even wrote a simple sentence saying, “It is hot”.  It was a pleasure to see their enthusiasm and willingness to further their learning.

Moving from our earth sound to our sea sound, we also discovered the sound ‘w’ for wave. Our creative spirits soared as we all crafted a wave effect using string and paint. The vibrant creations easily captured the dynamic movement of waves, which left us feeling inspired and proud of our artistic abilities.

Role-play has taken to the skies with our new aeroplane! It is clear we have all enjoyed stepping into this imaginative world where we have deepened our understanding about ‘Our Fantastic World’. On the aeroplane we have been roleplaying different job roles such as pilots, flight attendants, and passengers. We have also ‘travelled’ to various countries across the world and we have discussed, as well as investigated, these countries using different investigation tools to find out what it is like in these countries.  Is it the same as Thornton Heath? What’s the same? What’s different?

In maths we have begun exploring numbers and their parts. We have engaged in an exciting cutting and sticking activity, using ‘parts’ of an animal to piece it back together to make it ‘whole’. This fun project has helped us to start to deepen our understanding of numbers, pre-empting how just as animals have parts, perhaps numbers can also be made up of different parts to make a whole number.

It is clear to see that we love our phonics sessions and all love playing with Miss Butler’s phonic cards!  In order to bring phonics to life in a unique and fun way, Miss Butler made us our very own class phonic cards!  We can now role-play being Miss Butler and take on the exciting role of a teacher.  We have also used the phonics cards to play phonic games, practise our sounds and read our tricky words with our friends!

Our first term has been filled with wonder, creativity, and growth, laying the foundation for our future learning adventures. We can’t wait to see what the next term brings as we continue to explore and discover the world around us!
