ATW Reception news – Rainbow Fish, subitising and reading

In Reception this week, we have been reading ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister. The children have loved this story and have enjoyed retelling it using puppets. The story encouraged discussions about sea creatures and their habitats and the children have had lots of fun creating under the sea paintings and beautiful rainbow fish too.  The children have also used their problem-solving skills to rescue sea animals from ice. The children knew that heat and warmth would free them so used their warm hands and warm water to set them free!

In mathematics, they have developed their subitising skills with arrangements to 5. They started the week looking at regular and irregular dot patterns and extended their learning into subitising amounts they couldn’t see (beats on a drum or triangle).

The children have been working so hard and now know 8 of their phonics sounds. They have started orally blending and reading some words ready for reading practice to begin next week!
