This week in Reception, the children have been busy exploring our amazing world. Using the book, ‘Granny Went to Market‘, they learned about the different countries she visited. First, was a trip to Turkey which many of the children had actually visited! They learned about the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and then set up a market to sell their wares.
Next, they visited Thailand and found out about the festival of Loy Krathong. The name could be translated as “to float ritual vessel or lamp,” and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river. They experimented with making floating vessels by folding paper. They also tested different objects to see if they would sink or float.
Then, they visited Australia and looked at Uluru and the outback. They thought about how the ground was a different colour than the soil in Croydon and how there were kangaroos instead of foxes and squirrels. Finally, they dived into Africa and looked at the indigenous people, animals and landscape, comparing it to Croydon.
There was a thief in Reception who kept stealing shapes from Shape Land. First Celia Circle was taken, then Timmy Triangle, Sid Square and finally Ricky Rectangle. The children worked hard to solve the clues to find each shape. They discussed how they knew they had found the correct shape by checking each one against a list of corresponding properties.
