ATW Nursery News – Owls, nursery rhymes and languages

This week in Nursery, we have been reading and singing the book ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’ by Anna McQuinn. This has led us to think about our own emotions and in particular, what makes us happy. The children were able to share that they feel happy when playing with their toys, their siblings, coming to nursery and even eating lunch! Whilst singing the book, the last verse repeats ‘If you’re happy and you know it shout Hello’. Some children were able to share that they speak a different language at home and after checking in with our parents, we could then include 3 different languages; Ni Hao, Tungjatjeta (Tonge), and Kalimera. We finished the week by painting our portraits, to celebrate ourselves and how unique we are.

On Wednesday, a special visitor arrived and introduced the nursery to 3 different Owls and a Hawk. The children (and staff!) were amazed and full of questions. As the workshop continued, the children were able to recognise the differences between the Owls and Hawk by mentioning their difference in size, colour and head shape. We also learned what types of prey they eat from spiders to rats. Once the birds were safely stored away, the children took turns to hold and feel 2 types of feathers. They described the feathers as ‘soft’, ‘hard at the end’, ‘tickly’, ‘big’ and ‘quiet’. Upon reflection, the children were asked why the feathers are a particular colour and could identify that they are camouflaged. The children gave a big thank you to our visitor for bringing the birds into our nursery.
We have finished the week off by creating bird feeders for our local birds (and hopefully owls). First, we spoke about the ingredients we needed, next we needed to mix them and finally push the mixture into large pinecones to hang up. Once the children completed their bird feeder, we took a trip to our forest school to hang them high up on the trees for the birds to eat and enjoy.
After half term, our Forest School sessions will begin (more information to follow), as well as Nursery’s foundation to phonics, weekly visits to our music room, home activity packs and count down to EYFS Christmas making day.
We hope you all have a wonderful break.
