ATW Nursery news – forest school, phonics and shapes

A new half term comes with lots of educational learning both from within the classroom and out in our Forest School. We have started and ended the week by introducing Forest School to our little learners, the rules and boundaries that are expected, and how to use the facilities provided correctly. Our first sessions included lots of exploration of the Forest School, finding new and exciting environments including the Forest Kitchen and the low-level trees. We ended our session by playing a game of hide and seek with one child counting alongside an adult whilst their friends went to hide. The polytunnel was a great hiding place!
We have started our foundations to phonics, provided by the program Little Wandle, and have been learning the initial sound ‘S’. All the children could repeat back the sound as well as identify the sound from the objects in our game ‘What’s in the box?’.  We also introduced oral blending to the class and using our robot arms, the children were able to copy the phonemes and blend s-oa-p, s-u-n, s-a-ck and s-o-ck.
In our Maths carpet sessions this week, we have started to focus on 2D shapes, beginning with Circle. After identifying circles around the room, circles in the environment and learning a circle has 1 curved side, the children had a turn at using their finger to draw a circle in the air, on the floor, on their hand, on a partners back before drawing a circle on their whiteboards, which later turned into happy smiley faces. Great work Nursery!
