Phonics:
Our initial sound in phonics this week has been ‘h’. Whilst playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children were able to identify the words: hat, helicopter, house, and hammer all beginning with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’ and although this was a little more tricky, with support, we looked at blending phonemes to make the words: horse, hat, house, head. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table beginning with the same initial sound.
Literacy:
We continued to read the story ‘Willbee the Bumblebee’, focusing on the role of the bumblebee and learning key words: nectar, pollen, hive and honey. We have taken time to watch online how bees do their jobs and learn some new facts too! There was an open discussion on the carpet and the children had a go at answering “How do bees help us?” The responses were; “To get honey”-L.M, “By getting pollen”-E. D and “Taking the pollen to where it’s supposed to be”-A.D. After watching our short clip, we learned that bumblebees have 6 legs, 4 wings, no nose, and live mostly underground. Towards the end of the week, we looked at pollination and how bumblebees help to grow new crops and fruits. With our acting skills at the ready, we flew around the room like bumblebees, going from flower to flower to help spread the pollen around.
Maths:
This week has seen us look at the numeral 5. Our carpet sessions have involved the children finding 5 objects around the room. Counting the objects, the children can identify they have 5. This moved on to us identifying representations of the number 5, with either numerals, tally marks, in picture form, dominoes, dice or on a 5 frame. We then recapped our number 5 song, “5 frogs in a pond”. As the weeks have passed, the children have been creating Numberblocks for our display board as well as their own towers representing the number each week during our maths session.
Enhanced provision:
This week, we have been putting pen to paper to draw flowers and bumblebees for our creative display. The children have been putting lots of effort into their drawings, following directions, and giving things a go. See the attached photographs to see how amazing they are!
This week has also been very important for all our mums. We know how wonderful our mums are and how appreciated they are. The children have all created a teapot card, expressing what they love about their mummy, alongside a tea bag with the words ‘You are tea-rific’! We want to wish all our mums a very Happy Mother’s Day. Reasons why we love our mummy “She plays dinosaurs”, “She gives me cuddles”, “Because I love her” and “She plays all day superheroes”.
Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…

We look at one last book before the Easter break and have a few Easter crafts too!
