This week, in Reception, the children learned all about medical professionals. On Monday, our class soft toy had a bandage on his head. We thought about why he might have a bandage and who might have put it on him. We shared times when we had been ill and needed somebody to help us. We discussed who those people have been and what they have done to treat our ailments. We read the story of ‘Zog and the Flying Doctor’ by Julia Donaldson and practised using some of the medical vocabulary found in the book, such as ‘stethoscope’.
In mathematics, the children have been investigating measurements. They have compared the height of the children in the class, ordering themselves from tallest to shortest. They have tested the capacity of various containers and predicted which ones we think will hold the most and the least. We compared length using “snakes” and seeing who had the longest or shortest. We also looked at weight and enjoyed using the balance scales to see which items were heavier or lighter.
On Thursday, we were very lucky to have Nurse Linzi visit. She taught us how and why she uses plasters and bandages. She explained why people need injections and medicine. The children learned so much and applied their knowledge straight away by writing prescriptions and role-playing being nurses. Thank you Nurse Linzi for giving up your time to visit us.
