To celebrate World Book Day, we hosted an exciting week of events and activities to encourage a love of reading. Did you know that 1 in 10 children do not have a book of their own to read at home? At Whitehorse Juniors, we wanted to make sure every child had books to take home and keep for themselves especially during World Book Day.
We kicked off the week on Monday with a fun dress-up or dress-down event where children celebrated reading in style. Our English Champions led a whole-school assembly to share the plans for the week ahead. Year 6 students had the special opportunity to meet Matt Goodfellow online (author of The Final Year) and ask him questions. Year 4 had a very exciting P.E lesson re-enacting Harry Potter and later that day KS2 read to KS1! The children loved sharing books with each other and we are looking forward to continuing these reading sessions throughout the year!
On Tuesday, we welcomed poet Joshua Seigal to Whitehorse Manor Juniors. Josh delivered an inspiring assembly, where we met his cat Bluebell! Year 3 then took part in a poetry workshop with him followed by a Q&A with Year 5.
Parents were invited into the school to read with their children on Wednesday. For those who couldn’t attend, children were still able to share their favourite books with their classmates and read together. Year 5 also visited Waterstones, where they exchanged their World Book Day tokens for a special World Book Day book to take home!
Thursday was officially World Book Day. To celebrate, every child had the opportunity to choose a book to take home. With so many books and authors to choose from, there was something for everyone. Children exchanged special WHJUN tokens for a book of their choice.
To wrap up the week, we were thrilled to welcome author Lou Kuenzler, who delivered an engaging assembly about the power of imagination. Year 4 and Year 6 students participated in workshops with Lou. We were also delighted that Lou donated books to our school! There was definitely a buzz about reading at the end of the week.
Although it is the end of World Book day 2025, we’re not done yet! Next week, we’ll be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair and we’re excited to show the children even more of the wonderful world of books that they can enjoy.
