ATW Nursery News – phonics, parachutes and beanstalks

Our Nursery started the week by sharing experiences and moments from our half term. Listening to one another, the children shared all the fun things they got up to! Some experiences include going swimming, going to the park, playing with siblings, celebrating and going to birthday parties and even going on holiday to catch some winter sun.
We have learned our new initial sound in Phonics; ‘e’. Some children even looked around the classroom environment to find objects with the same initial sound and placed them in our phonics tuff tray, for example, the ‘egg’ from our role play area.
We paid a visit to the junior hall where we got out our parachutes and played various games that required excellent listening skills, teamwork, and lots of fun. The first game we played was all about movement. The children were asked to move the parachute slowly, increasing the speed until the parachute made big bouncy waves. The second game was ‘Cat and Mouse’. This game required two children to crawl around under the parachute whilst it was moving to chase/hide from their opponent. Some children were caught very quickly, whilst others…I think they just enjoyed being underneath! Our final game was called  ‘Switch’. Once the parachute was in the air, two children’s names were called and they needed to quickly run under the parachute and switch places with each other before the parachute came falling down. Everyone had lots of fun!
Towards the end of the week, our new story ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ by Nick Butterworth & Mick Inkpen was introduced, alongside lots of muddy materials, using plant pots and watering cans in imaginative play and adding some actions as the book was read.
