The topic for this half-term in Reception is ‘Watch out—there’s a monster about!’ The children defined a monster as something incredibly large or super frightening. Throughout the week, everybody was very creative, making their own representation of a monster.
The first book on this topic is ‘Spider Sandwiches’ by Claire Freedman. The children learned that the thing that made Max, the main character in the story, monstrous was his appetite and the things he chose to eat, such as slug milkshakes and beetle biscuits. Looking at the properties of a menu, the children created a menu of things they thought Max might like to eat if he visited Atwood. Everybody agreed they did not want to eat anything from this menu, so a new one was created with more agreeable things. The children then made sandwiches for themselves, choosing items other than spiders!
