Atwood Newsletter 15th November 2024

A busy week again at Atwood.

In Reception, the children have been busy learning about being a resilient learner and developing their writing skills. You can read more on the website here:

This week, Year 1 took a trip to the moon (sort of).  Before the children set off, they made sandwiches for the journey and thought about what else they would pack for the adventure.  Once there, they experienced wonderful sights and sounds.  They explored different textures and thought about what it would be like to actually visit the real moon.  This then inspired their writing once they’d landed safely back in class.

This week, Year 2 have been making squiggly worm spaghetti.  They have written instructions about how to make the spaghetti and actually made their own real versions containing everything from eyeballs to dead flies.  The children have also been using a number line for subtraction and developing their basketball skills in PE.

This week, Year 3 have been immersing themselves in learning how to write speech.  The children have been reading Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox and looking at how speech is separated from the rest of the text using inverted commas.  They will then begin applying this in their own writing.

In Year 4, the children have continued their work on the story of Matthew Henson.  They wrote letters in role to describe their adventures.  They have also been investigating circuits and electricity as part of their science work.

In Year 5, the children started the week by visiting the Gurdwara as part of their learning about Sikhism in RE. The children took the bus to Croydon and were excellent ambassadors for the school, demonstrating respect and manners while asking relevant questions.  In their literacy unit, the children have been looking at the book Lost Words and studying the poem Raven.

This week, Year 6 have produced some fantastic writing as they published their Watertower narratives.  Cyan class also treated us to a great class assembly today where they showcased all their learning about the Suffragette Movement. The children also carried out an experiment using Skittles to demonstrate diffusion.

Sports news

Netball season has started!  On Thursday, after school there were lots of children involved in matches as our netball and football teams competed against other schools. In the netball,  we welcomed Margaret Roper to our school and both Year 5 and Year 6 teams played against them in very competitive matches.

For many girls, it was the first time representing Atwood in the netball team and judging by all the smiling faces, everyone had a great time! Year 6 lost by one goal and the Year 5 match ended in a draw.  There were lots of positives to take away and we are excited to see the teams progressing throughout this season.

Well done to all that took part:  Year 6 – Alicia, Tekarra, Honey, Izzy, Autumn, Amber, Jiya and Lexie.  Year 5: Megan, Amelie, Harlowe, Mary, Salihah, Mia, Freya and Grace.

Meanwhile, on the football pitch the boys were taking on Courtwood in a cup match.  After a tense first half that ended 0-0, the boys then fell behind.  However, they battled hard and fought their way back to eventually win 2-1 with goals from Aidan and Courtney.

Scholastic Book Fair

Don’t forget to visit the Book Fair next week to snap up some bargains or early Christmas presents.  The fair will be open in the library after school on Monday to Friday as well as between 8.45 and 9.15 on Thursday and Friday.

And finally…

It was lovely to see lots of children celebrating their individuality by wearing odd socks today.  This was part of our Friendship Week learning about Respect.
