In Year 1, in their science lessons the children have been learning about amphibians and reptiles and what makes them different. In maths the children have been thinking about fractions of numbers and learning how to calculate halves and quarters. In English, the children have been reading The Awongalema Tree by A.D Stevens.
This week, Year 2 have been studying the poetry of John Lyons and learning the poem ‘Carnival Dance Lesson.’ In maths, the children have been learning about statistics and representing information in pictograms or block graphs. The children have also been making sea creatures out of clay.
In Year 3, the children have continued to read about the adventures of Edward Tulane. They then wrote a first person diary entry of his travails including the use of subordinating conjunctions. Poor Edward! So far he has been lost overboard in the ocean, recovered by a fisherman and chucked in a bin. Good job he’s only a toy rabbit. In maths, the children have been adding and subtracting mass.
In Year 4, in maths the children have continued to lean about time and been looking at the relationship between different units of time. In English the children have finished writing their own fairy tales and started reading ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Rauf. They have also been thinking about how to spell words with suffixes. In history the children learnt all about Anglo- Saxon law.
Year 5 have been learning all about the real life crime of the theft of the Crown Jewels by Thomas Blood in 1671. They have then been using this to write reported and direct speech from the characters involved. Year 5 also visited Riddlesdown for a STEM day where they got to programme Microbit robot cars, crack codes, and observe cells through a microscope.
In Year 6, the children are still rehearsing from their end of term production and have been busy making props and costumes. They have also been learning about the adventures Odysseus and his encounter with the Cyclops then using this to generate their own myths.
SPORTS DAY
On Thursday, the children in Key Stage One and Two gathered for their Sports Day. In glorious summer sunshine, the children paraded their colours around the field in front of a crowd of expectant parents. The morning saw children taking part in a carousel of activities including animal races, space hoppers, penalty shootingand dressing up. In the afternoon, the children gathered on the field for a succession of races. Children ran sprints, relays and long-distance races while others competed in field events. There was even time for fiercely contested mums’ and dads’ races. At the end of it all, it was announced that ‘Earth’ had won in the morning and ‘Air’ had won in the afternoon but more important than winning had been the fantastic show of sporting behaviour on the day. Everyone had taken part and all the children had been so supportive of each other. It was a great day. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support the children and to all the staff (with a special mention to Mrs Bayliss) for putting the day together.
SPORTS NEWS
In other sporting news, this week has seen children competing at the Croydon Schools Athletics Festival at Croydon Sports Arena. The qualifiers were on Monday for the boys and Wednesday for the girls. There were some really impressive performances competing against children from all across Croydon. At the time of writing we have 12 children who have qualified for the finals on Friday in various events. Well done to everyone who took part.
