How odd! Today saw us celebrating our individuality by wearing odd socks and the children embraced this day in style. It was a lovely way to round off a typically busy week.
YEAR GROUP BY YEAR GROUP
In Early Years, the children have been busy looking at the story ‘The Naughty Bus’. You can read more about everything the children have been learning by visiting the website here.

In Year One, the children have been been writing their own version of the story ‘Man on the Moon’. In maths, they have started to learn about subtraction to 10 and in Design and Technology the children have had loads of fun and made quite a bit of mess in the classroom while making a Moon Buggy using wheels and axles.
In Year Two, the highlight of the week was their trip to Hampton Court Palace to support their thematic learning about The Tudors. The children visited the maze, the kitchens and The Great Hall as well as sitting in the throne and having a workshop where they got to handle Tudor artefacts. Many thanks to the parents who helped on the day and to Miss Turner who stepped in to help on the trip as a result of Miss Daley’s illness.
Year Three have been preparing non chronological reports about dinosaurs before writing their own next week. In maths, they have also been using an expanded column method to complete 3 digit subtractions with exchanging tens and hundreds. They have also started their Science unit on Forces and Magnets.
In Year Four, the children have done some beautiful sketching using their skills to draw portraits of Boudicca. The standard was exceptional and the children really managed to convey mood and feelings with the expressions on the faces. They have also been exploring circuits as part of their Electricity Science unit and making Roman Shields.
Year Five have been carrying out experiments to see how temperature affects dissolving speeds as part of their work on soluble and insoluble substances. They have also been writing instructions on How to be a Viking and learning all about factors in maths.
Finally, Year Six were out and about today visiting the Natural History Museum. This trip was to support their learning about Charles Darwin and Evolution and Inheritance. They have also been thinking about how to use descriptive writing based upon the eerie picture book ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew.
BOOK FAIR
Many thanks to everyone who has visited the book fair this week. The generosity of parents has raised over £550 for the school to spend on books that will be used to replenish book corners in classrooms.
PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT
This week has seen over 150 prospective parents visiting the school with a view to their children joining us in September 2024. It has been a lovely opportunity to share the school with the local community and to think about all the things that make Atwood special.
We have some parental events coming up next week. So that we can get an idea of numbers, please respond using the Google forms sent home this week if you would like to join us for one of the events:

SPORTS NEWS
This week the Girls’ football team continued their successful start to the season with a 5-0 win over Ridgeway. There were some fantastic performances with silky skills in attack, great passing in midfield and rock solid defending at the back. Well done to everyone who represented the school.
Meanwhile, the Boys’ football team continued their unbeaten run with a 3-1 victory over Elmhurst last Friday and a hard fought 1-1 draw with Forestdale on Thursday this week. The boys were pressed hard having gone 1-0 down but fought back to equalise in a very even match.
And finally…
Without wishing to get too carried because it is still the middle of November, it is time to start thinking about dates and details for our Christmas productions. A letter has gone out today (via Studybugs) with details of performance and ticketing arrangements for Key Stage 2. Tickets will be available from Monday 27th November. Details of tickets for the KS1 Nativity will follow next week with tickets being available from the 4th December. Reception will send details of their festive celebration separately.
