During 2023’s Black History Month, we are connecting with our diverse histories and those of prominent Black British figures. Today we had our grand showcase assembly where the children wore red in support of the charity ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ and celebrated their wonderful homework.
The overarching theme for Black History Month 2023 is ‘Celebrating Our Sisters’. We have a rich range of resources in school to help us recognise and appreciate those Black women whose achievements have historically been overlooked. Our young learners have studied three influential women; Mary Seacole, Mae Jemison and Floella Benjamin.
Reception focused on Mary Seacole and told us about her traditional medicines, which she used to heal soldiers. Year one read a picture book about Mae Jemison and they were able to tell us all about Mae’s life and why she wanted to be an astronaut. Year two told us all about Floella Benjamin’s early life and displayed wonderful portraits in the style of ‘Pop Art’.
We hope that our Black History celebration will lignite the curiosity in our young learners and they will continue to research influential black people long after Black History Month is over. These stories of success and ambition can inspire our children of all backgrounds to do great things.
