Thursday morning saw a wonderful demonstration of teaching for Maths Mastery in Year 4 (4P). The children all enjoyed working on measuring area using huge square units to solve the problem of how much new carpet would be needed for the Year 4 corridor and how big a table cloth for the break out area would need to be. Teaching for Maths Mastery encourages the use of manipulatives (hands on resources) and different visual models before moving onto abstract concepts in order to deepen pupils’ understanding of what the maths is actually about.
