Atwood Newsletter 6th December 2024

December has arrived and the school is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The children have been rehearsing hard for plays and productions and we look forward to seeing many of you in school over the next two weeks to help us celebrate.

In Reception this week the children have been learning all about the world through the book ‘Granny went to Market’.  They have also been exploring the properties of shapes.

In maths this week, Year 1 have represented the numbers 17, 18 and 19 on a tens frame.  They have also used a variety of resources to show the number 20 and partitioned teen numbers into tens and ones.  In English, the children have discovered many new and exciting facts about Neil Armstrong which they will use to write our fact file next week.  This learning also linked with the thematic learning, where they sequenced the events of Neil Armstrong’s life.  In science, the children investigated their sense of taste by tasting a selection of food and deciding whether it was sweet, sour, bitter or salty.

On Tuesday, Year 1 visited All Saints Church, in Sanderstead, to learn about the Christmas story.  The children had lots of fun taking part in a variety of arts and crafts which linked with each part of the story.  We would like to say a great big think you to the Church for inviting us and thank you to the parent helpers who also came on the trip with us.

This week, Year 2 arrived in school on Monday to discover that their classroom had been transformed into a Winter Wonderland.  Jack Frost had paid a visit.  Next week, the children will be creating posters to track him down.  Elsewhere, the children have been doubling and halving in maths. In thematic the children have been focusing on the artist Holbein and his significance during the Tudor period and they even created some Tudor portraits in his style of work. In RE, The children have been learning about important religious holidays and evets such as Hanukah and Advent. There have also been lots of rehearsals and the excitement is building.

This week, Year 3 have been thinking about all the words they can use to describe emotions following their work on the media the ‘The Present’.  In maths, the children have continued their work on column subtraction and in computing the children have been learning how to write emails including how to copy in multiple recipients.

This week, Year 4 have been using maps to investigate all the lands that were conquered and made up the Roman Empire.  They have also been looking at how Hadrian’s Wall was built.  In literacy the children have been reading ‘Winter’s Child’ by Angela McAllister and in maths the children have been learning how to calculate the area of rectilinear shapes.

In Year 5, the children have had a busy week.  They have been writing instructions on how to live like a Viking.  How do you build a boat, farm or dress like a Viking? The children have also been identifying and naming the rivers of the UK.  In maths the children have been learning about squared and cubed numbers.

Year 6 have been building fantastic sentences and publishing their work on How to Mummify a Body so if ever you need an expert in that field, you know who to ask.  They have also been learning about percentages and finding their decimal and fraction equivalents. The children also looked at the River Nile today and compared it with uses of the river in Ancient Egypt.

Pyjamarama

Today it looked like everyone had woken up late and left their house in a rush as the school was full of children (and adults) in their pyjamas.  Of course, it wasn’t about being late. It was all in aid of a very good cause with children wearing their pyjamas to support Children with Cancer UK.  This event has raised over £500 and we are grateful for all your support.

Sports news

This week, Atwood netballers travelled to Regina Coeli for their first match with them.  It was a competitive game from the first whistle and although the team had lots of shots, they were unlucky to score only one goal.  The girls supported each other and fought hard to gain control but unfortunately it did not go our way this week.  Honey was outstanding in defence, earning herself the nomination of Player of the Match by the opposition.  Well done to everyone for an excellent effort and team work – Alicia, Izzy, Amber, Tekarra, Autumn, Madison, Bea and Honey.  Thank you to all the Atwood supporters that came along to watch.  The girls have one more match before Christmas and then it all starts again in January!

Christmas Lunch

A reminder that on Friday the 13th December Harrisons will be serving our Christmas lunch.  To add to the excitement, on this day the children are invited to come to school in their Christmas jumpers. Note this is not a full mufti day but Christmas jumpers over uniform, please.  To add to the festivities, this is also the day of the Christmas Fair and FOAP are asking children to bring a bottle to school for the Bottle Tombola.  However, note that wearing a jumper is not dependent on bringing a bottle.  Please support FOAP by bringing a bottle but if you can’t, please get in the festive spirit by wearing a Christmas jumper anyway.
