In Year Five, the children have been creating and performing ‘blackout’ Poetry using the book The Lost Words: A Spell Book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris’. The Lost Words is a ‘book of spells’ that seeks to conjure back the near-lost magic and strangeness of the nature that surrounds us. The poetic technique involves reading the text and then blacking out parts of the text to leave a poem from the powerful words that remain. All the children’s performances have been recorded and linked with QR codes so that the videos can be viewed at home by scanning the code in the children’s reading diaries. The children have really enjoyed, the book, the poetry and especially the performing.
