CYP: Lest we Forget

On Monday morning, at the Upper School, the House Captains delivered a very emotive and informative assembly.  They explained the significance of Armistice Day and why we were having a Remembrance assembly and holding a two-minute silence. We watched a very interesting video, briefly explaining events of World War I and the effect that this had on life as we know it.  We then made our way down to the lower playground, where the House Captains shared a poem and every class laid a poppy wreath created by the children whilst listening to the hymn, ‘Abide with me’.  Each poppy contained a written message to those who have fallen in war, sharing gratitude for their sacrifice and hope for the future.  We observed the two minute silence and the House Captains conlcuded the gathering with the poem ‘ In Flanders Fields’.  The children were silent and reflective as they thought about those who have given their lives in battle, as well as those still serving in conflicts around the world. Special thank to our House Captains who worked hard to create a very engaging and thought-provoking assembly and selling poppies and wristbands throughout the week in support of the Royal Birtitish Legion.

The beautiful poppy wreaths will form part of our British Values display next to the Year 4 corridor.

We have also been wearing bright colours for Children In Need today  – thank you for sending your children in with their pound coins in support of this amazing charity that has changed the lives of so many children and their families across the UK. At the Upper School, the Well-being Ambassadors delivered a fantastic assembly explaining what they charity does and why are donations are so important. This was their first assembly this year and they delivered it with great confidence!

Cypress Superstars

This week at the Upper School, Phoebe, Giorgia, Lily and Ariana in Lime worked hard to produce their own poppy wreath to remember those who hav edied in conflict. Their wreath will join the others on our British Values display. A very thoughtful gesture, girls. Sam in Sycamore and Elis and Jack in Hazel produced amazingly desriptive narratives recounting the story of Beowulf. The writing had a very mature style, with clear  awareness of audience and purpose – very impressive! Click below to hear Sam’s story.

Lathan in Lime class has been working on his addition skills – he gave very thorough explanations for answers and had clearly mastered the skill he had been taught. Well done, Lathan! Elliot in Holly wrote a recipe for a Victoria Sponge Cake – yum! I can attest to the fact that it was exceptionally delicious (Holly class saved me a big slice!). Elliot used well chosen vocabulary and interesting adverbs in his writing – move over Marcus Wareing!

Friendship Week

Next week is ‘Friendship Week’. Friendship Week is Cypress’s opportunity to focus on kindness and how to be a good friend, as well as on anti-bullying. This year the ‘Anti-Bullying Week’ theme focus is ‘Choose Respect’ and the children will be  taking part in a range of activities and discussions, helping open up conversations on this important topic. On Monday 18th November the children will have an assembly introducing Friendship Week. Throughout the week, there will be ‘Friendship Week’ classroom activities and circle times in each class focusing on self-respect and respect for others. Friday 22nd November is Odd Sock Day Children are asked to come to school wearing odd socks to remind us to embrace our differences and celebrate how we are all unique!

Have a wondeful weekend. See you on Monday!
