This week the children have been looking at significant figures and events in Black British History. Children have been learning about everything from John Blanke to the origins of the Notting Hill Carnival. We have been hearing about Mary Seacole, studying the Bristol Bus Boycott and celebrating the soldiers from all around the world who fought in World War II. All of these stories and many others are helping the children to build a fuller picture of British history and building our knowledge of events and people that have sometimes been overlooked. We are always trying to build more of this work into our whole curriculum through texts and resources so that everyone’s story can be told.
As an exciting footnote, Mrs Baldry met the authors Catherine Johnson and Sandra Agard, who have written two important books that the children in our school are studying. The children have enjoyed Race to the Frozen North and The Bristol Bus Boycott. Mrs Baldry took the opportunity to get a signed copy and to talk about the exciting work going on at Ecclesbourne.
