Cypress Upper: Croydon Sports!

Last week, a group of Cypress children competed in the annual Croydon Primary Schools Athletics Competition at Croydon arena. The competition was held over 3 days; Monday 17th June was the boys qualifiers, Wednesday 19th was the girls qualifiers and children who qualified were invited back for the semi-finals and finals on Friday 21st.  Children representing over 60 schools attended, competing in both track and field events.

On Monday, Israel (Birch), Makai (Rowan), Pablo (Hazel) and Rico (Larch), competed in the sprint. They ran really well, placing 5th and 6th in their heats. Ralph (Larch) and Cruz (Sycamore) competed in long jump, jumping an impressive 2.61m and 2.74m! Despite falling over and fracturing his wrist, Ian (Oak) picked himself up in the 800m and completed his race. We were so impressed by his resilience! Sebastian (Sycamore) ran the 600m, coming 3rd place and making it through to the finals. Finally, our relay team (Makai, Pablo, Taylan, Rico and Sebastian) ran a brilliant race with smooth change overs, narrowly missing out on qualification.

On Wednesday, it was the girls turn. Kaycee, Emilia, Faith and Lea competed in the sprint, placing 6th and 7th. Faith placed 4th place, just narrowly missing qualification. Despite the hot weather, Evie(Hazel) persevered in the 600m, placing 9th in her heat. Alana (Sycamore) competed in the long jump, qualified the heats, placing in the top 6 in the finals. Mariam (Larch), wowed us with her throwing, placing 2nd in the rounders ball throw, just missing out on the top 3 in the finals. The girls relay team (Ruby, Lea, Faith, Lara and Sienna) qualified in their heat in 2nd place, moving to the semi-finals but just missed out qualifying for the finals. Ruby (Beech) also competed in the long jump, qualifying in 3rd place in the heats and going on to place 2nd in the finals. Malaika (Larch) won her 800m heat and went on the place 3rd in the final on Friday.

We are so extremely proud of the children’s effort and determination. They should be so proud of this achievement!
