CYP – Showing Pride in Ourselves and Each Other

It has been a very busy week this week at Cypress.  We have been making progress in our learning, enjoying visitors and raising money to help others.

At the Lower School, we started the week with an assembly about Red Nose Day which is happening today.  We learnt how the money we donate can provide healthcare, food, education and a safe home for children in the UK and abroad.   During the assembly, we heard about 13 year old Zanecty who couldn’t walk do Comic Relief got her a wheelchair to help her get around.  We also heard about 18 year old Kaitlyn who had nowhere to live so a charity ‘Streetlife’ helped her find a safe place to be.  Finally we heard the story of Chandu who is 15 years old and lives in India.  Chandu was not able to go to school so he was supported in his education by a charity that is funded by Comic Relief. We now really understand how the donations we make can make a huge difference to someone else’s life.

On Monday, the Upper School children gathered for an assembly that delved into the theme of interdependence. They explored the delicate balance between working together to achieve positive goals and knowing when to focus on individual efforts for success. The discussion was brought to life with an animation highlighting the power of teamwork, before contrasting this with Disney’s “Hakuna Matata” and the unique relationship between Timon, Pumbaa and Simba. The children reflected on how teamwork allows us to capitalise on each other’s strengths, leading to collective success. However, they also recognised that there are moments when independent work is essential, allowing one to concentrate and showcase personal abilities.

Cypress School Choir @ CSMA Junior Festival!

Cypress School truly shone at the CSMA Junior Festival – Annual Festival of Music, with a dazzling performance that spanned folk, rock, pop, and soul. Led by the dedicated Ms. Barker, our talented choir explored themes of kindness, unity, and respect through song, creating an unforgettable evening. Highlights included the magical kites during ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ and stunning solos from Autumn and Jessie. We’re incredibly proud of all our choir members who represented the school with such heart and skill. To find out more about this memorable event and see the full story, click here.

Reception Visitors

As part of their topic ‘To the Rescue’ our Reception classes have had two visitors this week. On Wednesday, they were visited by fireman Michael who is one of our parents. The children were very excited to hear all about his job and asked lots of sensible questions.  They also learnt about the importance of smoke alarms at home and home to make a fire safety plan.  On Friday, Reception were visited by  PC Narwol and enjoyed finding out what it like to be a police officer.  The children were very interested in how people are arrested.  What an exciting week!

Red Nose Day

Today is Red Nose Day and the school looked very colourful with children dressed in outfits inspired by the word ‘Celebration’.  The School Council chose this theme as this year is the 40th anniversary of Comic Relief.  All the children donated £1 and the Upper School House Captains also raised money by selling Red Noses on the school gates and Ms Maulloo and Ms Hamilton have been busy selling noses from the school office.

Red Nose Day at Upper School kicked off with a fantastic assembly led by the School Council, who took us on a journey to meet three incredible beneficiaries of Comic Relief, from the UK to far-flung corners of the globe. They explained why Comic Relief is such a lifeline for so many, and how our support truly makes a difference. The highlight of the morning? An energetically infectious whole school rendition of the ‘Put A Nose On It’  Comic Relief song – a proper toe-tapping whole school performance that had us all grooving! It was a brilliant reminder of the importance of coming together for such a great cause… But the fun doesn’t stop there! On 28th March, we’ll be holding a cake sale at the Upper School during break and after school, all in the name of raising even more funds for Comic Relief. So, whether you’re a baking whizz or just keen to donate, get involved – every little helps, and a slice of cake (or two) will help finish of the week on a  sugary high!

We’ll be sure to update you with the grand total once we’ve worked out how much we’ve raised in total.

Cypress Superstars

We have lots of visitors sharing their successes in their learning with us this week.  Well done Maliyah and Robin in Orange Class who came to share their amazing independent writing.  They had written prescriptions in role as doctors.  Maliyah’s was for Ms Cheeseman and Robin’s was for his mum.  Congratulations to Clara, Louiza, Oscar, and Zackary in Turquoise Class who came to share their writing based on the book ‘The Iron Man’.  We were very impressed with the high quality vocabulary and expanded noun phrases they had used in their writing.  Keep up the great work!

This week, we have some fantastic achievements to celebrate at Cypress Upper. First, a big congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 Cypress Choir for their outstanding performance at the CSMA Festival on Wednesday. Your hard work and dedication really shone through, and you delivered a memorable performance.  Well done also to our School Council representatives for leading a very informative and engaging Red Nose Day assembly. You made the event educational and fun for all. We’d also like to recognise Oliver, Mabli, Jinisha, and Stella from Holly Class for their excellent work in PSHE. They created thoughtful and eye-catching posters reflecting our discussions on teamwork, which are now displayed around the Upper School to serve as a reminder to us all about the importance of working together. Lastly, a special mention to Elham from Birch for his impressive effort in mastering fractions of amounts. He worked independently and showed great determination in understanding the concept. Well done, Elham, for your hard work and commitment!

We wish all our children a families a relaxing weekend.
