It has been another action-packed week at Cypress this week with so many things happening. We are so proud of our children and teachers for keeping their cool in this hot weather! Please remember to send your child into school with a filled water bottle every day and apply suncream before school.
At the Upper School this week, we have focusing on the ‘learning power’ empathy. We looked at video explaining what empathy means and talked about how we show each other we care. The children are reflecting on their learning in their BLP journals this week. Our Year 5 children have been learning about the Windrush generation as part of their whole class reading this week.
At the Lower School, we have been learning about Windrush Day and had a special assembly on Thursday marking the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush ship docking in Britain in 1948. We considered the reasons why people might move to a different country and how they must have felt. We also learnt about how many Caribbean people who came to Britain as part of the Windrush generation were not treated fairly and how our society has changed and developed over the past 75 years.
Lime Class Assembly
We began the week with a wonderful assembly from Lime Class who shared their learning journey in Year 4. The children shared some wonderful examples of their learning and were able to reflect on what they had enjoyed most this year. The children spoke with both confidence and clarity and ended the assembly with a wonderful rendition of ‘Reach’. Thank you to all our parents and carers who were able to join us. Well done Lime Class, you were amazing! A huge thanks to Miss Barker and Ms Joshi for all your hard work in helping the children prepare.
Hawthorn Class Assembly
Hawthorn wowed us this morning with an informative and very funny assembly about bees and the process of honey making. Imitating the book ‘Until I met Dudley’, they gave us their quirky and creative examples of what they THOUGHT the process was before acting out the actual process. They gave us lovely examples of how, just like bees, they are able to work collaboratively (minus the regurgitating) and ended with a song about friendship. Thank you to Mr Shipley for all you hard work and support in preparing the children for their performance.
Year 2 visit the Upper School
Year 2 joined us for their first Rainbow assembly at the Upper School this week. They also stayed for playtime. Year 2 then came to the Upper School on Friday afteroon for some extended playtime in our garden. We were so impressed with their behaviour and focus during assembly and look forward to welcoming them back at the Upper School next week for their next activity. Mrs Prideaux came down from the Upper School to talk to Year 2 about applying to be a ‘wellbeing ambassador’ at the Upper School in September. Look out for a letter coming home on Friday with more details about how children can apply.
Croydon Athletics
This week children at the Upper School have been taking part in Croydon Athletics, competing against other schools in the borough in sprinting, relay, long distance, long jump, high jump and distance throw.
