CYP Lower – Poetry Slam!

After a jam-packed Book Week, we rounded off celebrations with a fabulous assembly led by Margaret Bateson-Hill, here at Lower School. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 all came to the assembly hall for an interactive storytelling session.  She took us on a journey to meet a demanding King who was used to getting his own way. He wanted to touch the moon so he used all the cupboards in the land, stacked high to try and touch it. After a while the kingdom ran out of cupboards so they had to cut down all the trees in the land to make more cupboards. Eventually, the King was almost able to touch the moon, but decided to take the cupboard from the very bottom of the tower to stack on the top, in order to reach his goal. Needless to say, the cupboards all came toppling down, along with the silly King, who ended up with a very sore head!

Margaret then visited each Reception class, as well as Rainbows, Gold and Silver where she delighted the children with wonderful rhymes. See if your children can remember the rhymes they learned today in the workshops!

This afternoon every class in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 performed a poem as part of our Official Poetry Slam!  Mrs Parker and Margaret Bateson-Hill were our judges and Miss Chapman compered the event. It was so joyous to see spoken poetry so enthusiastically rehearsed and delivered. We were incredibly impressed with each class and their wonderful recitals of so many different poems and every class was awarded a resounding 10 by our judges! A huge well done to the children and staff for their amazing efforts.

Thank you for all the incredibly innovative Extreme Reading photograph entries. We are collating them all and prizes will be given out on Monday.

Remember to keep hold of your World Book Day token and use this at our Book Fair (held at CYP Upper this year) which is open today, Monday and Tuesday, after school.

A HUGE thanks to Mrs Parker for organising the most amazing Book Week and to our wonderful PTFA for funding our visiting poets and authors.  WE LOVE READING AT CYPRESS!
