It has been a busy week at Cypress with lots of visits and learning taking place.
At the Lower School, we have been learning about the importance of respect. We have been considering how sometimes if we are good at something or win a prize it can make use feel like we are better than other people. This can lead to us treating them differently and being disrespectful. We looked at the example of Mojo who won the award of Very Important Monster of the Week. He changed his behaviour towards his friends because he thought he was better than them and should always be first. We used this to reflect on the behaviour of ourselves and others.
At the Upper School we have been reflecting on some of the core values that make our school so special—being safe, happy, and healthy. We took a deep dive into what these values look like in action, drawing from both our own thoughtful discussions and insights from our fantastic teachers. It was a chance to remind ourselves of the behaviours that bring these values to life, helping to create the kind of school community we all want to be part of. We also pondered on our collective worship theme of justice, and the need to put fairness and respect at the heart of everything we do.
Lime Class Assembly
This morning, Lime Class dazzled us with a brilliant assembly, where they guided us through their journey of the curriculum in an engaging and thoughtful way. They shared their knowledge on how to find fractions of amounts, making what could be a tricky concept feel accessible and fun. The class also impressed us with their ability to read and analyse descriptive narratives from their Year 4 text, Varjak Paw by S.F. Said. Delivered with poise, confidence, and a delightful touch of humour, their performance was nothing short of captivating. To top it all off, they ended with an uplifting song, inspiring us all to stay motivated and believe that anything is possible when you set your mind to it. A huge thank you to Ms. Stewart and Ms. Isaacs for their unwavering support in helping the children deliver such a memorable assembly. Well done, Lime Class!
Ruby and Violet Class Visit London
As part of their learning in thematic, Ruby and Violet Class visited London. They enjoyed visiting the garden at 120 and seeing all the landmarks. The children also visited St Dunstan’s church. Year 2 also carried out a traffic survey on London Bridge as part of their geography fieldwork.
Year 2 Holi Assembly
On Tuesday we were joined by Nabhi Das who came to deliver an assembly about the Hindu festival Holi. Holi is a festival that celebrates spring, love and new life. It is known as the festival of colours and people across India and the world celebrate by throwing coloured water and powders on one another. The children really enjoyed learning about this festival and especially when they had the chance to throw the colours.
Green Class Assembly
On Thursday morning, we started the day with a great assembly from Green Class which included a super performance of ‘Jack and the Flum Flum Tree’. To read more about this, see our news article here
Year 1 and 2 Science Workshops
This week we have been very lucky to have one of our parents Dr Lisa Moylan and students from Kingston University come in and deliver workshops to our classes in Years 1 and 2 this week. The children got to dress as scientists in their white coats and complete a range of activities. This included using a microscope. The children were very inspired and Peter in Indigo Class told Miss King he felt like a real scientist.
Cypress Superstars
Congratulations to Abigail, Jason, Jaydah, Gilbie and Louiza in Turquoise Class who came to visit Ms Binks with some interesting writing. They have been finding out more about The Monument and shared some very interesting facts. Did you know that you if we laid the building on its side it would read Pudding Lane where The Great Fire of London started.
There’s so much to celebrate at our school this week, starting with the incredible creativity of Karter from Hazel Class. Not only did he create some original artwork that caught everyone’s eye, but he also impressed everyone by meticulously recreating the Independent Learner Value sticker with remarkable attention to detail, using his keen observational skills. What an inspiring young artist! Meanwhile, in Sycamore Class, Emilia, Omari, Tolibat, Sophie, Ilyas, and Bea have been delving into Picasso’s Blue Period. They selected their colours thoughtfully and reflected deeply on the message they wanted their art to convey, creating pieces that are both powerful and expressive. It was fantastic to hear them speak so confidently and eloquently about their work.
Bertie from Holly Class also deserves a special mention. He’s been diligently practising for his Grade 1 violin exam and has absolutely wowed his teacher with the impressive progress he’s made. Hard work truly pays off, Bertie – a huge well done to you! Over in Rowan Class, the children have been buzzing with excitement as they prepare for Mother’s Day, and there will certainly be no dry eyes this Sunday. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of David, Clem, Gabby, and Basil, who have poured so much thought and love into their beautiful words and creative projects, Rowan Class Mums are in for a real treat.
This week, we also celebrate Aisha from Holly Class, who, with the help of her mum, has created a stunning Stone Age village using recycled materials. It’s clear Aisha has used her history knowledge to make informed and thoughtful choices in her project – an excellent blend of creativity and learning. Cruz in Beech Class has made a remarkable improvement in his focus and concentration. Cruz produced a wonderfully informative information text on Shakespeare, demonstrating both a keen understanding and impressive attention to detail.
Have a restful weekend.
