The theme for Black History Month 2024 is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.
Today in assembly, we looked at key achievements of three significant black figures:
Benjamin Zephaniah, a performance poet from Birmingham whose celebrated works include a vast collection of children’s poetry, inspiring countless young people to explore self-expression through poetry;
Kofi Annan, the first black African person to become the Secretary-General of the United Nations who later established the Kofi Annan Foundation to support lasting peace and human rights;
Olive-Morris, a Jamaican-born, British-based community leader and activist who was well known for organising and fighting against racism and was a founding member of the ‘Brixton Black Women’s Group’.
