As ever, there has been lots going on at Atwood this week.
In Nursery, the children have been learning the phonic sound ‘h’ and investigating the number 5.

This week, the Reception children have been thinking about the environment and looking after their teeth.
Year One have had a busy week. They leant all about kindness and their feelings. They also learnt about Fire Safety. In English, the children have been working their Chalk’ stories and in maths the children having been comparing mass and thinking about the terms heavier and lighter.
Year Two have been reading the book ‘A walk in London’ and finding out lots of fascinating information about the Shard. They have also been using coins to make different amounts of money and learning about the Islamic festival of Eid al Fitr.
In Year Three, the children have been learning about equivalent fractions and completing lots of exciting maths challenges as part of our maths week. They have also written their non-chronological report about mammoths using coordinating conjunctions and fronted adverbials. They children then completed more research into the lives of stone age people. Where did they live? What did they eat? What did they wear? were all questions the children wanted answers to. In science the children have also been learning about the layers in soil and different levels of permeability. They also learnt the story of Buddha.
Year Four have been thinking about how using pronouns can help to make a piece of writing more interesting instead of just repeating the same noun again and again. They have also been subtracting fractions in maths and learning the points of the compass in Geography. The children are also enjoying Charlotte’s Web in their reading sessions.
Year Five have been applying their division and multiplication skills to find fractions of amounts in maths. In English, the children have been creating expanded noun phrases linked ot their Highwayman writing. They have also been honing their volleyball skills and enjoying Berlie Doherty’s ‘Street Child’ in their reading lessons.
It has been a tough week for Year Six as they have been working through a series of practice SATs in preparation for the real thing in May. Whilst it is not particularly fun, it gives a good opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with the set up and get a measure of how far they have come. It also helps teachers to identify any areas that need revision over the next few weeks. The children have acquitted themselves admirably and should go home for the weekend feeling proud of themselves.
Maths Week
This week saw the whole school celebrating maths with a series of challenges. Mrs. Daulton -Swift talked about the importance of maths for every job in assembly and on Wednesday the children challenged themselves to solve various puzzles. A particularly frustrating puzzle for Year 5 was ‘The Bridges of Koningsberg’. In assembly today, we celebrated all the Times Tables Rock Star class champions. Also, well done to Amber class who accumulated the most points in school this week.
Sports News
This week saw an all Pegasus play off knockout match for the boys’ football team. Following a successful league campaign, Atwood were drawn against Ecclesbourne in the knockout stages. The boys travelled across Croydon in the mini bus for a hard-fought match. The boys were 1-0 down at half time but then a screamer from Courtney saw them draw level only to be knocked out with a long-range effort from Ecclesbourne that led to a 2-1 loss overall. It was a combative match on a less than perfect surface. The boys were disappointed but we are very proud of them and they can be proud of themselves.
After school clubs
This week saw the end of the latest round of extended services after school clubs for some of the activities. It has been a good week at the end of an exciting term of clubs. In Cookery club the children made jam tarts and in Inventors club the children were busy making catapults. Elsewhere, Craft club have been busy making lots of creative artworks. On Thursday, the Djembe club gave an al fresco performance to parents at the end of the school day. The children demonstrated how far they have come with their drumming skills.
FOAP and Happy Mother’s Day
Thank you to all the FOAP volunteers who gave up their time today to help with the delivery of daffodils for Mother’s Day. To all the mums out there, I hope that you have a restful Sunday and get treated and pampered.
Eid Mubarak!
To all of our families who are celebrating the end of Ramadan with Eid al Fitr this weekend, I would like to wish them Eid Mubarak.
The playground before school
Please can I remind all parents and children that there should be no ball games on the playground before school. Children arriving in school before the classroom doors are open should wait sensibly by their class for the doors to open. Similarly, children should be discouraged from using the climbing frames and play equipment. The equipment is not supervised at this time and the school cannot be held responsible for any injury sustained. Thank you for your cooperation.
Uniform
Please can I remind parents that if your child is wearing trainers as part of their school uniform (on non-PE days) then the trainers should be completely black with no visible logos. There are a number of children who are coming to school in trainers with white soles and logos. If you are considering buying new footwear during the Easter holidays, please make sure they conform to school policy. If you are not sure, please ask. Also, now that the weather is warming up children are welcome to wear summer uniform (although not on Tuesday for class photos). A reminder that boys should be wearing grey or black socks not football socks or grip socks with logos and motifs. Thank you for your cooperation.
