This week, Reception had a visitor from The Little Red Riding Hood.
This week, Year One have started their new topic on Africa. The children have been looking at different animals and their distinctive features. They have also been reading Tinga-Tinga tales such as ‘Why Lion Roars’. They have concluded their materials topic in science and in maths the children have been partitioning two digits numbers into tens and ones. In PE the children have also started learning some skills in preparation for Sports Day later in the term.
Year Two have had a great start back to term. The children shared all the amazing things they got up to during the Easter break! Academically, they have begun learning about time in maths and all about the seaside in their Thematic lessons. Additionally, the children have been getting sporty in their PE lessons. They have sharpened up their athletic skills by practising their throwing and running skills. The children have also been making their own versions of lolly stick animals linked to the book ‘Rosie’s Magic Horse’ by Russell Hoban.
This week, in Year Three the children have been learning about adding and subtracting fractions. To do this they have needed to learn all about numerators and denominators. In English, they have been exploring the images in the book ‘The Mysteries of Harris Burdick’ by C Van Allsburg in anticipation of writing their own mystery story. They have also been reading ‘The Wild Robot’. In science, they have started a new topic of ‘Light and Shadow’.
Year Four have been looking at decimals this week and linking them to fractions. In English, the children have been studying ‘The Book of Bees’ by Piotr Socha and Wojciech Grajkowski. This beautiful book is full of fascinating facts about bees that have enthused the children. Did you know that bees make up to 20 flights a day to collect pollen?
This week, Year Five have been learning about the Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. They have been translating it so that it is no longer nonsense. In art, the children have been making clay model portraits of themselves in the style of Picasso. In science, the children have started a topic of ‘Animals including Humans’. The children have also been reading ‘Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System’ and learning all about the planets. In maths, the children have been learning about rounding decimals to the nearest tenth or whole numbers. Finally, in Lavender class the children have also adopted some stick insects!
This week, Year Six have continued their work on Wolf Brother. They have been writing a selection of sentences with a variety of openers to describe Torak’s entrance to the Raven Clan camp. They have also been polishing up their arithmetic skills and revising multiplying and dividing fractions. In PSHE the children have been learning about stress and anxiety and thinking about coping strategies.
Premises updates
Although the school was closed over Easter there was still a lot of work going on. Some of you will have noticed that Key Stage One have new playground markings and the soft fall surfacing under the Key Stage Two monkey bars has been replaced. Also, the Nursery has been updated with the old grey carpets removed and new flooring and lighting installed. Inside the school, cupboards have been removed to make way for lockers and work has started on refurbishing the final upstairs classroom. Further work was carried out on the tress in the orchard with the wood then used as chippings for the flower beds in the playground. We are hugely indebted to our premises team for working through the holidays to ensure that your children are learning in a first-class environment.
And finally…
We are expecting some sunny weather next week so please make sure your child comes to school properly prepared. Apply sunscreen in the morning and make sure they are wearing a sun hat. Please note that staff cannot apply sunscreen in school.
