In Nursery, the children have been thinking about patterns and eggs amongst other things.

This week, the Reception children finished the week with a lovely spring walk on Riddlesdown Common.  Many thanks to the parents who gave up their time to join them.  You can read more here:

This week, Year One have been measuring capacity by filling different containers with water and recording the results. The children have created their own treasure maps and included a key and compass on these maps. They also created their own animated scenes using coding in computing. Finally, the children built the boats they designed last week and tested them to see if they could float for one minute without sinking.

This week, Year Two prepared for Easter by attending a lovely Whole School Assembly about the meaning of Easter. The children also immersed themselves into a range of different Easter related activities. In maths, the children have been continuing to learn all about their topic, Money. Recently, they have acquired the skills of knowing how to recognise and order coins. In English, the children have made very impressive leaflets all about visiting London! In other subjects, year two have learned all about Eid Al-Fitr and why it is so special to Muslim children all around the world. They also followed a map to sketch and colour landmarks around the River Thames.

This week, in Year Three as part of their thematic learning, the children have been learning about maps and using a compass. They have been identifying locations on maps and using their developing compass knowledge to recognise direction. They then used their reading compass skills to orienteer their way around the school grounds, following clues and directions to find their lost class mammoth! They had to pick up word clues along the way that then created a sentence to reveal the mammoth’s precise location. There was huge relief when he was eventually found!

Year Four have had a busy week!  They published their campaign leaflet trying to persuade people to save endangered species. They are finishing Varjak Paw, which the children have really enjoyed and have started reading Charlotte’s Web.   They rounded off their science topic with a key questions quiz about animals and their habitats and they have even managed to squeeze in some tennis and volleyball.

Year Five received a very exciting letter this week.  Earlier in the term, they wrote to King Charles to express their concern about the environmental impact of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.  This week the King wrote back! (See the attached file.)  The children have also been publishing their Highwayman writing, learning about decimals and thinking about human life cycles.

This week, Year Six have been reading more of ‘Wolf Brother’ by Michelle Paver and using it as an inspiration for their writing.  They have been writing a diary entry in the role of Torak describing the fateful events of the bear attack that befell Torak’s ‘Fa’.  On Thursday, the children took a tip to The Fairfield Halls to see the Whitgift School Spring Concert.  The children had a great time and came back full of enthusiasm for live orchestral music.

Gold Award

Congratulations to all the children who received a gold award in our assembly today.  This half term we have been celebrating those children who really go over and above to make a positive contribution to their class, school or wider community.

And finally…
