This half-term in Year 4,the children have begun to learn about Anglo-Saxons and have looked at the beautiful illuminated manuscripts from that time in history. In art, the children have each created an illuminated letter for their first initial. They have incorporated motifs from nature and have carefully chosen 4 colours to best showcase their illustrations.
An illuminated letter was usually the first letter of a page or paragraph. It was always enlarged and in colour with gold applied to some areas, while the rest of the text remained black. The images used to enhance the letters include animals, plants and mythological creatures. The word Illumination comes from the Latin word illuminare meaning ‘light up’. Have a look at our examples and see what you think.
