CYP – Year 3 visit Crystal Palace Park

This week Year 3 has the amazing opportunity to visit Crystal Palace Park as part of our Thematic curriculum! Despite the cold and rainy weather, we wrapped up warm and put our wellies on to go exploring around the park!

The Great Exhibition was built in 1851 in Hyde Park by Joseph Paxton. It was moved to Crystal Palace in 1854 and unfortunately burnt down in 1936. Amazingly, some of the Italian terraces and parts of the structure still remain on the grounds of Crystal Palace. Year 3 were astonished with the size of the staircases and by looking at the monumental column, learnt how tall the Exhibition was!

The Park is also home to the dinosaur sculptures, designed by Sir Waterhouse Hawkins. Year 3 have been studying about Hawkins in Literacy and so, was amazing to see these historical monuments up close!

This year we were also lucky enough to visit the Crystal Palace museum where we learnt a lot more about the history of the park, including Charlie – the circus star elephant, the beautiful fine art displayed inside and the water towers. While Birch Class did not manage to enter the museum due to unforeseen circumstances, they will receive an interactive workshop from the Museum, at school after the half term.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who supported us on the trip!
