Atwood Newsletter 5th July 2024

It has been a very hectic week as we try to squeeze in everything before the end of the term.

In Reception and Nursery,

In Year 1 in maths, the children have been learning to tell the time (o’clock and half past) and they discussed why learning about the time was important.  In English, they looked at a pancake recipe and identified the features.  They orally rehearsed the text, so that they will know how to make pancakes next week.  During DT, the children decided what topping they would like for their pancake when they make it.  They used the fruits from their tasting session to make their decision.  When learning about animals in science, the children sorted the animals (using a Venn diagram) into whether they were herbivores, carnivores or omnivores.

This week, Year 2 had the most amazing trip to the beach at Broadstairs.  Although it was linked to their ‘Seasides’ topic, the main theme of the day was to have some fun in the sunshine.  To read more about the day and see some pictures visit the news story here

In Year 3, the children have been learning about perpendicular and parallel lines, shapes and angles in maths.  In science, the children have been studying the structure of plants and learning about the functions of different parts of the plant. They have also been thinking about photosynthesis.  They are still enjoying the story of Leon and the Place Between in their literacy unit.  They have also been thinking about Stonehenge and discussing why and how it was made.

In Year 4, the children have been investigating the effect of different liquids on enamel.  What will Coke, water, milk or vinegar do to eggshell if left submerged over the weekend?  We will have to wait and see. The children have continued thinking about the perilous journey of Ahmet the refugee from the book ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ and using this as inspiration for their writing.

In Year 5, the children have been learning all about volume in maths and applying their learning to problem solving.  In English, the children have been studying Benjamin Zepheniah’s ‘The British’.  A powerful poem that reflects on all the influences that built modern Britain written in recipe form.

In Year 6,  the highlight of the week was their performances of The Jungle Book.

After weeks of tiring rehearsals, set building and dedication to learning the songs, the Year 6 team were free to enthral the eager audience. The techno team and backstage crew worked tirelessly to ensure the spectacular show ran smoothly. From the heartfelt solo of Raksha to the shrieks and howls of the monkeys and wolves, the jungle spirit shone with enthusiastic might. Every member of the jungle cast gave their all to amaze the awaiting audience who were left in awe by the end of the show’. (With thanks to Alex for the review)

Year 6 have also been spending time at their secondary schools as part of the transition process.

SPORTS NEWS

Today, a number of swimmers from Atwood took part in a swimming gala at Whitgift school.  The school came a very creditable 3rd place after some excellent individual and relay performances.  Well done to all the children who took part and thank you to Mrs Bayliss who put the whole event together.  Thanks also to staff and parents who came along to support.

And finally

Thank you to all the parents who came along and supported the Reception children at their Fun Day.  We managed to avoid the showers and fit in a carousel of sporting activities as well as some novelty races too.  Most importantly, the children had loads of fun!
