This week we have all been working hard and focusing on our learning so that we can reach our full potential.
At the Upper School, we began the week by looking at the Building Learning Power Skill of ‘Listening’ which is our focus this week. We looked at a video of Professor Grover and explored this to show that although he could explain what listening was he actually wasn’t very good at listening himself. After that, we identified the key skills of a good listener and why this is important. We have been focusing on this skill in our BLP lessons this week and recording our strategies in our journals.
At the Lower School this week, Mrs Jerman led assembly on Monday to raise awareness of plastic pollution and it’s clear we have some incredibly eco conscious children at Cypress. Mrs Ebrahim celebrated Eid with children in assembly on Tuesday with KS1 and we wish all families who celebrated this week Eid Mubarak! Well done to all of our Rainbow recipients – it was great celebrating your achievements in assembly today.
Upper School Council Meeting with Harrisons
This week the School Council have met with Harrisons, our catering company, to look at our provision for school lunches. The children carried out surveys in their classes to find out what the children like and would like to improve at lunchtime. They also made some excellent suggestions for themed days we can have next year. Thank you to Tracy (our school cook) and Judith from Harrisons for taking time to meet with the children. Well done to our School Council who showed amazing maturity and excellent innovation. We are so proud of you.
Holly Class Assembly
Holly Class kicked off our Friday morning at the Upper School with a fantastic assembly about their learning this year. They shared with us their ‘Year in Reading’ and we were all amazed at just how many books they had read. The children shared the things they had enjoyed most and what they were proud of of. We had talented artists, sporting successes, Gold Award winners and Croydon Athletics representatives. Holly Class ended their assembly by thinking forward to their hopes for Year 4 and a rousing rendition of ‘High Hopes’. What a wonderful start to Friday! Thank you to Mrs O’Connor and Mrs Sterling for all your hard work with the children and a huge thanks to all our parents and carers for joining us this morning.
Reception visit Crystal Palace Farm
Reception children went on an adventure to Crystal Palace Farm this week, travelling by bus to get there. This is their first ‘big’ trip and they were all so excited! They all enjoyed a handling session where they touched some animals and learnt exciting facts about them. They had a picnic lunch and then visited the playground! We are so pleased everyone had an amazing time on this very memorable trip. We will post a separate story with photos next week!
Year 4 Parents Reading in the Library
This week we have been joined by lots of parents from Year 4 for our parent reading event in Woodland Library. It has been wonderful to see the children enjoying reading with a range of adults and to see our parents enjoying sharing a book with the children. Thank to you to parents from Hawthorn and Lime Class who have visited this week and to parents in Rowan Class who are joining us today.
Year 2 Paired Reading at the Upper School
On Thursday afternoon, Year 2 visited the Upper School as part of their transition and carried out some paired reading with pupils in Year 3. Each class visited the library and enjoyed sharing a book and getting used to being at the Upper School. The children had a wonderful afternoon and worked so well together. We look forward to welcoming them back on Monday when they will be joining us for lunch and staying for play with Year 3.
Word of the Week
At the Upper School, this week’s ‘Word Wizard‘ was Flora in Sycamore Class who wrote an excellent sentence using the word ‘frothy’. This week’s word is ‘sneer‘. Please post your entry in the box outside the office to be in with a chance of winning.
At the Lower School, Isla and Malo won this week for their use of ‘waves‘ in fantastic sentences. Our final Word of the Week this school year is ‘travel‘.
Croydon Athletics Achievement
Congratulations to Malaika in Willow Class who came third in the Year 5 600 metres final on Friday. A very impressive achievement. We do hope you continue running as you obviously have a talent for it.
Cypress Superstars
Well done to Tate in Reception for his fantastic independent writing this week, inspired by his trip to the farm. Heidi, Malaika, Ailani and George worked really hard understanding an analogue clock in maths this week. Maihan and Joey are budding scientists, showing a great deal of understanding when comparing different animals. Elliot in Yellow class has completed the most amazing homework showing the habitats of different minibeasts – we love the natural resources you have used! Absiola, George B, Frank and Ruben have been expertly using expanded noun phrases in their writing this week. Debbie in Reception has shown a fantastic understanding of doubles, demonstrating she’s ready for the challenges of Year 1. Finally, our Year 1 children have all been working so hard to create their African masks!
Congratulations to Oliver in Oak Class who earned a medal and new belt in Jujitsu last weekend. Well done to Kaiana in Larch Class who earned two medals (one gold and one silver) in her gymnastics competition this weekend.
