Year 4 at Cypress were so lucky to meet published poet, Neal Zetter, on Tuesday 1st March. He read some of his amazing poems to the whole school in assembly and each Year 4 class had an exciting workshop with Neal. Children learned how to write personification poems on Book Week-related themes.
Hawthorn class: ‘I am a Pencil’.
Lime class: ‘I am a Poem’.
Rowan class: ‘I am a Book’.
We paid close attention to Neal’s top tips, the main one being to not let anything get in the way of our best ideas (so even if we didn’t know how to spell some of the most exciting words, we could and should still use them). He also advised us not to try to make it rhyme because this would limit which words we could use. The focus was on maximum creativity and enjoying our writing.
Neal was very impressed with the rich imagination the Year 4 children demonstrated, and commented on how Pegasus’s commitment to reading was contributing to ‘amazingly high standards of literacy’.
A huge thank you to Neal for sharing his expertise. We have been taking inspiration from his work all week to “Just write the poem!”
